02.03.08 – Interior of Old Engine Shed, constructed in 1863, prior to renovation
02.03.08 – This section of the building is the original running shed, with full length inspection pits
02.03.08 – Rails along the pit roads are laid on large timber baulks
02.03.08 – The inspection pits are brick-lined, with steps at each end
02.03.08 – Rails are laid on the baulks with single-sided chairs bolted through the web, and to the side of the timber
02.03.08 – Large hex-headed bolts hold the chairs firmly in position
02.03.08 – The shed floor is lowered to aid access for running maintenance
02.03.08 – Looking towards the rear of the shed, with the ‘modernised’ 1877/78 corrugated extension on the left
02.03.08 – The corrugated infill on the left is a ‘modern’ alteration carried out when the extension was cut back to provide road access to the main works
02.03.08 – The floor of the running shed is laid with setts, which clearly show their age
02.03.08 – The extension is separated from the running shed by a series of pillars retained from the original wall
02.03.08 – The extension has an earth floor and a virtually flat corrugated roof
02.03.08 – The original extension was timber-framed and corrugated-clad. The existing structure is of block construction with corrugated infill.
02.03.08 – Midway along the running shed the ‘roof-light’ clearly illuminates the timber rafters
02.03.08 – The rear third of the shed originally contained a fitting shop for day-to-day repairs. The division between the two sections is clearly marked by a change in the wall construction and the remains of a dividing partition. (also see http://www.roger-dimmick.fotopic.net/p48807604.html)
02.03.08 – The supporting pillar is larger at this point as it contains an original, but in-filled, window
